Simple but so delicious.. This recipe is worth checking and making!

These Coffee brownies have many names and variations in Finland.

With this recipe you will succeed to get an authentic, subtle coffee taste to the brownies.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder

  • 1 ample teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar

  • Almost 1/2 cup milk

blank

  • 2 tablespoons / 1 1/2 oz butter (35-40 g)

  • 2 tablespoons strong coffee

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder

  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla sugar

  • 4 oz icing sugar (120 g, a bit less than 1 cup)

Directions

  1. Melt the butter, let it cool down.

  2. Whip eggs and sugar to a light color foam.

  3. Mix dry ingredients, flour, dark cocoa powder, baking powder and vanilla sugar (if using vanilla essence, add it to the butter or milk in next phase).

  4. Add flour mix, milk and melted butter a bit by bit while mixing to the egg and sugar foam. Don’t beat, just mix them. Start with the flour, mix, ,add milk, mix, add butter, mix etc.

  5. Pour the dough on parchment paper that you have put to a baking dish.

  6. Bake in 390 °F for 10-12 min. Check readiness. Don’t bake too dry. Let cool down.

  7. Make the icing: Melt butter, add strong coffee, mix, add cocoa and vanilla, mix.

  8. Add icing sugar while mixing, and while it’s still a bit runny, spread on top of the cake. Let cool for 15 mins, add sprinkles.

  9. Cool for 30 min and cut to pieces. (somebody needs to eat the edges to have tidy squares!)

Finnish Coffee Brownies (Mokkapalat)

Finnish Coffee Brownies (Mokkapalat) - Feels like Finland

Sweet aromas of coffee, cocoa, sugar and vanilla - what could go wrong? Nothing. These Mokkapalat brownies are pure joy to taste!

This coffee brownies recipe came to Finland already in the 1940's via Sweden and it is still going strong! It’s especially popular in school bake sales.

And it has not lost it’s magic, I tested this recently with people who have never seen or tasted this cake and these brownies disappeared even faster than I imagined!

Might be worthwhile to double the recipe, if you are baking for more than 3-4 people or having a party. I am sure this will be a great hit in any party. In Finland, even the kids love this - and then we think how did they get used to the taste of coffee..

Such a delicacy it will take your tongue away like we say in Finland!
